A new temporary website, at least for the ICC branch, is at: home.comcast.net/~bosqueverde/STC_Bunch.htmThis site does not have a lot of space (25MB, I think), as it's just a personal web space that comes with my ISP account. If I read the data correctly, based on the space used so far, I can fit about 10-15 pages on it. That sounds like a lot, but compared to the old site, with its more sophisticated structure, the current space available is tiny. So, eventually, the Bunch will need something more, but I think that might be a ways off. Just something to keep in mind.

If we consider using sophisticated automation (bots, interactive applications), then more than web hosting would be needed (database, shell for running the bots, also code repository, host to run forums). If there is an idea how to find ~200$/year to fund it (donations, ads) then buying some VPS host (on sth like linode.com) could be an option. If not, then ... maybe somebody would be found to host at least selected parts (personally I just consider buying VPS host for some other purposes, maybe I would be able to host something, but I can not make any commitments now).
BTW I think it would be nice to keep stcbunch as 'above the servers' organization. Not many such efforts remained...

Firstly, thanks to Bosque for setting up that temporary webpage. If it's OK with you, Bosque, I'll mention it in my next message to the STC Bunch members (which may be this weekend), and I'd like to update it whenever we have some news so it can become the place to go for the latest.
billscotty has offered to donate server space, and I intend to take him up on that. I believe we should be able to run bots and so on from there. The main reason we don't have more sorted out in this area is that I myself don't have the technical knowledge required. For this reason, ICC's UneasyKing is going to take charge of the technical side of things; he has quite a bit of experience, and I think he'll do a good job.
On this subject: myself, billscotty, UneasyKing and ChessicStudent are meeting on the ICC on Thursday at 9:30pm ICC time to talk about some of the issues involved (USCL time is the same, FICS time is 6:30pm Thursday, GMT 1:30am Friday). If anybody else wants to come along, they're quite welcome. Just be online then and let me know you want to take part (we'll either find a spare channel to talk or else examine a game and kibitz to one another). I've arranged to meet on the ICC because I think that's where most people will have accounts, NOT because I want to exclude people from other servers. If you want to take part and don't have an ICC account, try creating a free trial account; if you can't do that, please let me know as soon as possible. We should be able to work something out. If anybody can't make it but has points they'd like considered, then mention them here and I'll raise them.
Of course, I'll report back, and any discussion started there can be continued here or elsewhere.

Hi again
Well, some of us have met up, and we've got the server space more or less sorted out, and as I understand it, it will be able to accomodate all our need for bots and so on. A big issue now is the new website. There are two things I want to mention in this respect:
1. We need to decide what is actually going to go on it. Probably I'll start a new thread on this later, summarising the ideas we've had so far, but any other ideas in the meantime are much appreciated.
2. Can anybody actually help out with designing and writing the html for the website? You won't have to write any of the text that people will be reading, nor will you have to do any of the php stuff that will create dynamic pages (such as the membership list), but we could do with a person of some people to come up with a visual look for the site and then write the html to make this actual. If you want to help with this, either reply here, message me on a server (I'm camembert on FICS, ICC and USCL), or email me at lee@audiblerecords.com
Thanks all Lee

Considering we start from scratch, maybe it could make sense to use some CMS tool, the chances that some ready to use skin would be OK for us are surely non-zero. For instance plone (http://www.plone.org)

If someone would help me with the coding, I can provide the web space (I have a 5 gigs space from my web host, and 250 gigs bandwidth per month) that I would be willing to donate to help the STCbunch going again. I just use the space right now for my blog that I don't update particularly often. I am not a very good web programmer, so I would need some help designing and getting the website up.
Please let me know if I can be of help.
Btw. My handle is shropshire on FICS.

Thanks very much Shropshire, that's a very kind offer, but we actually have the web space already in place. If anybody does know somebody who can help out with programming, however, we can probably always use them.
We do, incidentally, now have a basic visual look for the website decided, and it's just a question of putting the content in. Once it's there, there'll be all sorts of announcements on all the servers. Hopefully won't be too long now...
